Rosemere Cemetery, Opelika, AL. Established 1870. Referred to as Opelika City Cemetery.
SITE UNDER RE-CONSTRUCTION
Some say the cemetery dates to 1854, but this is not correct. There has been no evidence to suggest there were any burials on the property of A. B. Bennett upon sale to the city in 1869.
The old burying ground was outside the town, at "Old Lebanon," which was the old Lebanon Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery which was/is 2 miles S/SE from the center of downtown Opelika.
All that remains today is a historical marker for the church & the remaining graves at the cemetery.
The church was founded in 1837, with the first wooden building constructed about 1842, and the first burials were about that same time.
Before that in this section you were likely buried on your farm or plantation. Burials at Old Lebanon stopped about 1875.

This page deals with only the 64 original lots and who purchased the plots in them. This does not include the "new section" across the street that opened about 1900. Taken from a 1950's survey map of the cemetery. Most of the original records were destroyed, and what survives today was reconstructed beginning with a survey done by the W.P.A. program of WWII.
All of these lots were sold by 1900.
Originally called lots, they are referred to today by some as blocks. Each square Lot contains 128 graves. Each square 1/4 contains 32 graves. Each square 1/8 contains 8 graves.
Listed is each Lot, then Plot & who either purchased the plot or who is the oldest burial (assumed to be owner). The person listed may or may not be in it. Some men owned more than one plot (Greene & Renfro are a few), so make sure to look at all plots.
Whoever surveyed the cemetery did not do a good job. I corrected what was on the map v/s the actual plots in the cemetery. This is an ongoing project & I will update the site as I get each lot done.
